Our Heritage - View the Cockerel

Sunday 29th June 2014 - View the Cockerel

The Cockerel was taken down from the Spire when work commenced in the Spring of 2014. The first date on the Cockerel was 1812 and it has been restored and finished with gold leaf on a materials only basis by Mr. Andrew Day, Works Manager of PDG Ltd in Risley, Derbyshire.

Thank you also to Norman, Alan, Sandra, Janet and Martin for contributing to the materials.

We held a 'View the Cockerel' day on Sunday 29th June for a once in a lifetime opportunity to see it before being returned to the newly repaired Spire a week later.

Over 100 villagers came to the church to see the Cockerel and a storyboard of how he was renovated and a brief history of why cockerels sit on church spires. Thank you to Mrs. Lane-Spouge for this board.

Villagers kindly donated £331.50 plus £100 towards the bell frame repairs.
